THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND WHEN CHOOSING AN IMAGE

A headshot MUST be more than a pretty picture. Be intentional with what you hoping to communicate with your selections.

01

What are you trying to communicate?

Does the photo convey your humor? Your sass? Your intensity? Are you dark and mysterious? A quirky leading lady? Make sure the photo isn't just a good photo. It has to communicate who you are without being a caricature.

02

Are your eyes speaking?

Do your eyes tell a story? Do they draw the viewer in? Do they make the viewer think, "This person has a fire in them. I want to know them." If the eyes aren't alive, it isn't the photo you want to pick.

03

Confident and Approachable

There is a fine line between confident and arrogant. There is a fine line between mysterious and unapproachable. You want people to think, "They look like they'd be great to work with and would know exactly what they are doing." Avoid photos that seem apologetic, uncertain, confrontational... you want confident and approachable, whatever the overall trait you wish to communicate.

04

Be careful who you ask for an opinion

Your parents, your best friend, your significant other... these people will be looking for something different in a photo of you than your agent, your voice teacher, your vocal coach, your musical theater workshop professor. If you are unfamiliar with what makes a good headshot, ask the opinion of people who look at them all the time in a professional setting, and can point out a great one from a kind-of-good one. Sometimes the subtle differences make an incredible impact.
